Russia Iran Relations: There has been a new turn in the relations between Russia and Iran in recent years. Especially since 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. In fact, Russia and Iran have been rivals of each other for 200 years in the past. However, now due to global circumstances and geopolitical challenges, they are coming closer to each other.
The main reason for coming closer to Iran and Russia is believed to be the conflict between the two countries with America and its allies. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin is going to meet Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian on Friday (October 11). This meeting will take place in a program organized in Turkmenistan.

Development of relations between Russia and Iran
Relations between Russia and Iran started improving since the 1990s. Russia supplied military equipment to Iran, including tanks, missiles, helicopters, and fighter planes. These relations improved further after Vladimir Putin came to power and in 2005, the two countries signed an arms deal worth one billion dollars.
In 2015, the foundation of the strategic alliance between Russia and Iran was laid. Both countries helped maintain Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria. Russia used Iranian bases to bomb rebel positions in Syria, and the two countries conducted extensive military cooperation.
Iran’s support for Russia became even more important after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Iran sent hundreds of drones to Russia, which were used in the war against Ukraine. Besides, the Iranian Army also gave Russia training in operating drones, which helped Russia a lot in the war.
Experts’ opinion on Russia-Iran relations
Emil Avdaliani (director of a Georgian think tank) says that the Ukraine war has further increased the importance of Iran for Russia. Before 2022, relations between the two countries were not good to some extent, but after the Ukraine war, Iran’s support to Russia has become very important. Apart from this, Anna Borshchevskaya of Washington Institute for Near East Policy says that relations between Russia and Iran are also getting stronger because Iran has openly supported Russia in the Ukraine war. Both countries are helping each other keeping in mind the future military needs.
