Tom Gurnon, professor of earth sciences at the University of Southampton and lead author of the study, says that scientists know that continental rifts raise huge rocks, such as the walls separating the East African Rift Valley and the Ethiopian Plateau. These steep rocks often surround internal plateaus that rise from the strong and stable centers of continents. But both of these landscape features are usually formed at a difference of 1 to 100 million years. Therefore, many scientists believe that they have been formed separately, which have had to go through different processes.

India’s Western Ghats also rose up
According to the report published in the Nature journal, Tom Gurnon says that for the study, the trench walls formed after the breakup of the last supercontinent of the earth were investigated. One of these walls is in India, which is called Western Ghats. It is 2000 kilometers long. The Highland Plateau in Brazil is 3000 kilometers long. There is the Central Plateau in South Africa, which is 6000 kilometers long. That is, the lower parts of these plateaus have risen several kilometers. Behind which is the wave in the mantle.

Every million years they grow by 15 to 20 kilometers
In the research, scientists claimed that the team had compared these places with topographic maps. Then it was discovered that these were formed due to the separation of continents while rising, because the rising continents cause disturbance. Due to this, strong waves arise. These waves run inside. Due to these, these plateaus rise, but at a very slow pace. Every million years, they grow by 15 to 20 kilometers. Due to these, the shape of the plateaus keeps changing. Garnan says that the breaking of these continents not only affects the deep layers of the Earth, but its effects are also visible on the surface of the continents, which were previously considered stable.
