Thailand Prime Minister: Thailand’s Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin has been removed from his post. Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday (14 August) ordered his removal from the post of Prime Minister. Shretha Thavisin has been removed from the post for appointing a minister with a criminal conviction.
The Constitutional Court in Bangkok ruled on Wednesday that a real estate tycoon who was a relative of Shretha was given a place in the cabinet. Even though the person appointed had served a prison sentence and was a lawyer. The court has considered this case a violation of ethics rules.
Five of the court’s nine judges voted to dismiss Shreetha and his cabinet. The court said the prime minister was “well aware that he had appointed a person who seriously lacked moral integrity.” The case was brought to the court by a group of former senators appointed by Thailand’s former ruling military. The court’s decision has led to political turmoil in the country.
Prime Minister lacks moral values- Court
According to a CNN report, a week ago, the court had ordered the dissolution of the main opposition Move Forward Party (MFP). Its former leader was also banned from politics for 10 years. Now, a week later, the court has dismissed the PM. While reading out the court’s decision, Judge Punya Udchachon said, ‘The court decides by majority that under the Constitution, the Prime Minister is removed from his post because he has not shown honesty in the appointment of this minister.’
What did the court say regarding the dismissal of the Prime Minister?
The judge said that the Prime Minister must have known that lawyer Pichit Chuenban was convicted by the court in 2008, yet he gave the convicted lawyer a place in the cabinet. The court said that Pichit’s appointment shows that Shretha has no integrity and has violated ethical standards. After the court’s decision, not only Shretha but his entire cabinet has also been dismissed. Now the Parliament will have to meet to elect a new Prime Minister.
