The advisor on religious affairs to the interim government of Bangladesh has said that there is no problem in fasting and praying at the same time in the country. He called for the creation of a harmonious country where people of all religions can live together peacefully.
There have been several incidents of violence against members of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities in Bangladesh after the Sheikh Hasina-led government was ousted earlier this month.
‘Attacks took place at 278 places in 48 districts’
The Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance said that since the ouster of the Hasina-led government, people from the minority community have been attacked at 278 places in 48 districts.
Several Hindu temples, houses and business establishments of the minority community were destroyed in Bangladesh this month amid a student-led movement against reservation in government jobs.
Addressing people before Friday prayers at Hazrat Osman Jame Mosque in Halishahar area of ​​Chittagong district, Religious Affairs Advisor Dr AFM Khaled Hossain called for building a country of religious harmony where people of all religions can live in peace, state-run news agency BSS reported.
‘Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony’
He said, “Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony. There is no problem in fasting and praying at the same time in this country. Everyone will freely follow and propagate their religion. This is the right of all citizens.”
Hussain said that in the changed circumstances after the fall of the Awami League government, some miscreants attacked and vandalised religious places and houses of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.
He said, “Propaganda has also been spread in some foreign media to tarnish the country’s image.” He said that strict action will be taken against those who are trying to harm communal harmony. Hussain sought cooperation from everyone to maintain law and order and harmonious atmosphere in Bangladesh.
