Bangladesh Crisis: Bangladesh Foreign Minister Mohammad Tauhid Hussain on Thursday (August 15, 2024) has given a statement regarding Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country. He said that the government will soon take a decision on the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as the cases against her are increasing. In an interview to Reuters, Tauhid Hussain said that we do not want to speculate, but Sheikh Hasina is facing many cases against her. He said that the final decision on the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina depends on the Home and Law Minister of the country.
‘Creating an embarrassing situation for India’
Bangladesh’s foreign minister said, “Sheikh Hasina is staying in Delhi while looking for options for political asylum, which is creating an embarrassing situation for neighbouring India. I am sure India will take care of all these things.” However, he did not give any details about this matter. Mohammad Tauhid Hussain is an advisor on foreign affairs in the interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus.
Sheikh Hasina and other members of her party Awami League have two murder cases registered against them in Bangladesh. She fled the country on 5 August 2024 amid violent riots and protests across the country.
Murder case going on against Sheikh Hasina
According to a report by news agency PTI, ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, two senior ministers in her cabinet and a sacked police chief, along with six others, will be tried on charges of murder. The case has been filed by a well-wisher of grocery shop owner Abu Saeed, who was killed in police firing during a procession taken out in support of the reservation movement in Mohammadpur on July 19.
After Sheikh Hasina left Dhaka, protesters targeted the residences of her party leaders and attacked people and monuments associated with the Awami League party. Local media reports said that angry mobs attacked and beat several party leaders to death.
