Singapore is a small island country spread over 719 square kilometers, which is counted among the most modern and rich countries of the world.

Singapore is so small in comparison to India that God knows how many countries can fit in India. This was PM Modi’s sixth visit to Singapore in his 10-year tenure. The strengthening of relations between the two countries is being discussed everywhere, but do you know that the connection between India and Singapore is thousands of years old. Perhaps it is from the time when Singapore used to be Singhpura or even older when it was known as Temasek.

How did Temasek become Singapore?
Before the 14th century, Singapore was known as Temasek. In India it was then known as the Golden Island. If we believe in Malay folklore, the ancestors of the first king who ruled Singapore came from India. Stories related to this king are also found in the book of history of Singapore, Sejarah Melayu. According to this, there used to be a king of Kalinga country in India, whose name was Shulan. According to the book, Shulan was a descendant of the Greek emperor Alexander.

Who named Singapore’s Na Singhpura?
Once King Shulan set out to attack China with warships. During this time, his eyes fell on Temasek i.e. Singapore. It happened that the way to China was very long, so King Shulan decided to stop in Temasek. During this time, a Chinese spy deceived him and told him a false story that China is very far away, he will not be able to reach there. King Shulan also believed him and he stayed in Temasek. It was told in the book that later King Shulan married a princess of Temasek. After this, one of his descendants was Nila Uttama, who changed the name of Temasek to Singhapura.

There is another story about Singapore. According to Malay documents, King Rajendra Chola of the Chola Empire had also come with King Shulan to attack China. Both of them defeated the Srivijaya Empire on the way and captured it. Seeing all this, the Song Dynasty of China got scared and sent a message to King Chola through a spy that China is very far away. After this, King Rajendra Chola returned, while King Shulan stayed there and married the princess of Singapore.

After this, in the year 1299, Sang Nila Utama, a descendant of King Shulan, reached Temasek. Here he saw a lion. He had seen a lion for the first time. When he came to know that it was a lion, he named Temasek after it and today it has become Singapore.

Till the 13th century, Singapore was a part of an empire called Sri Vijaya. At that time, the Sri Vijaya empire included today’s Java, Sumatra, Malaysia and Singapore. According to a historian John Miksi, the historical connection between India and Singapore is revealed. He says that in the 14th century, under the influence of Indian languages, the name of Temasek must have been changed to Sinhapura. John Miksi says that perhaps the story of King Chola must have been transformed into the story of King Shulan.

Singapore Stone
Apart from stories, there is another proof of the connection between India and Singapore, whose name is Singapore Stone. This stone is still kept safe. There is a language written on this stone, which is being tried to be decoded. An ancient script is written on it. Experts estimate that the script written on it is between 1000 and 1300 AD. The words written in it are in Sanskrit, Tamil or Javanese language. Experts believe that the words written on it have a connection with India, but it is difficult to find out what is written on it because only one piece of the stone is present.
