Are India-Canada relations on the verge of breaking? Foreign Ministry gave this answer in Parliament

India Canada Relations: In response to a question asked about India-Canada relations, the Ministry of External Affairs said that both the governments are in touch regarding the status of their bilateral relations. The ministry said that for stable bilateral relations, it is necessary to respect each other’s concerns, territorial integrity and sovereignty. In this regard, the Government of India has repeatedly appealed to the Government of Canada to take prompt and effective action against anti-India elements operating on its soil.

It calls for action against those who are trying to vitiate the atmosphere in India with separatist and extremist ideologies, glorify the murder of our leaders, issue threats to our current political leadership and diplomats. , disrespecting and vandalizing places of worship and making statements supporting the partition of India by holding so-called “referendums” and provoking people.

Even diplomats are not getting facilities

Giving information, the ministry said, “Canadian authorities are capable of providing security to our diplomats and diplomatic assets, but they have recently expressed their inability to provide security to our diplomatic camps from violent acts of separatist and extremist elements. “As a result, our diplomats and consular officers are being denied the facilities afforded to Indian and Canadian citizens, especially senior citizens/retired people.”

Relations between India and Canada in the field of trade

In its response, the Ministry of External Affairs said that currently about 1.8 million Indo-Canadians (about 4.7% of the Canadian population) and about 4,27,000 Indian students, including about 4,27,000 non-resident Indians, are currently living in Canada. Not only this, India and Canada have important relations in the field of trade.

India-Canada bilateral trade is $9.36 billion (2023 figures), of which India’s exports to Canada are $5.56 billion and imports from Canada are $3.8 billion. On the investment side, India’s stake in Canadian pension funds is estimated to be about 25% of their Asia-Pacific investment portfolio. Also, Canada is the 17th largest investor in India with FDI of $3.9 billion.
