Padma Purana says that the person who fasts on Ekadashi whether he wants to or not, becomes free from all sins and attains the supreme abode, Vaikuntha Dham. It is mentioned in Katyayana Smriti that it is the duty of all men and women from the age of eight to eighty years, without any distinction, to fast on Ekadashi. In Mahabharata, Shri Krishna has told Yudhishthir the names of 24 Ekadashis and their importance to avoid all sins and faults.
Importance of Ekadashi fast
In the Vedic culture since ancient times, yogis and sages have been giving importance to turning sense activities from materialism towards divinity. Fasting on Ekadashi is one of those sadhanas. According to Hindu scriptures, Ekadashi has two words Ek (1) and Dasha (10). True Ekadashi is to transform the ten senses and the activities of the mind from worldly things to God. Ekadashi means that we should control our 10 senses and 1 mind. Evil thoughts of lust, anger, greed etc. should not be allowed to enter the mind. Ekadashi is a penance which should be done only to feel and please God.
According to Hindu religious beliefs, Ekadashi date is very dear to Lord Vishnu. According to mythological belief, the glory of this fast was told by Shri Krishna himself to Yudhishthir. Due to the effect of Ekadashi fast, the person gets salvation and all the tasks are accomplished, poverty is removed, there is no fear of untimely death, enemies are destroyed, wealth, prosperity, fame and blessings of ancestors are received.

Lord Vishnu had kept Mohini form
According to the legend, during the churning of the ocean, when the pot of nectar came out of the ocean, a dispute started between the demons and the gods as to who would take the pot of nectar. After this all the gods sought help from Lord Vishnu. In such a situation, to divert the attention of the demons from the pot of nectar, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of a beautiful woman named Mohini, after which all the gods consumed the nectar with the help of Lord Vishnu. This day was the Ekadashi date of Vaishakh Shukla, hence this day is celebrated as Mohini Ekadashi.
