American Army In Diego Garcia: The Indian Ocean, located to the south of India, is a vast sea area that is monitored not only by China but also by the US and other world powers. The reason is that it is an important trade route. Despite being more than 20 thousand kilometers away from America, the US Army has built a military base in this ocean, the place is Diego Garcia Island which looks like a small pill.

Last month, the United States deployed two B-52 bombers to the Indian Ocean as part of its Pacific Air Forces training program. Not surprisingly, it has become an increasing focus of Washington’s Indian Ocean strategy, with the disputed island of Diego Garcia at its centre.

Britain had control over Diego Garcia

The UK has historically controlled Diego Garcia but in 1966 the US took a 50-year lease for the base. This lease has now been extended to 2036. The local population has been displaced and outsiders are restricted from entering the area. Reports suggest that US fighter jets have launched bombing missions over Afghanistan and Iraq from the base.

Declared part of Mauritius in the United Nations

Even after the UN Special Court declared Diego Garcia to be a part of Mauritius, both the US and the UK are refusing to vacate the area. The strategic importance of this base is immense. Also, the UK does not charge rent for the US presence. In April, the US deployed two B-52 bombers there under the guise of a training program. This exposed its intentions for military operations across Asia, including countries like China, Iran-Iraq and Africa.

The US has defended its position by claiming that if Diego Garcia were returned to Mauritius it could potentially come under Chinese control, jeopardising regional security. Despite strong ties between Mauritius and China, there is no security agreement between them.

India had expressed concern during the 1971 war

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Indian strategists expressed concern about the US presence in Diego Garcia. At that time, the US was allied with Pakistan due to the Cold War. Although India won the war, the possibility of US military aid to Pakistan remained a matter of concern.
