‘Bangladesh needs India’, said Mohammad Yunus amid attacks on Hindus

Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus on Friday (August 16, 2024) said that India needs Bangladesh amid attacks on Hindus. He has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Narendra Modi and assured him of the protection and security of Hindus and all minorities in his country.

PM Modi said in a post on the social media platform X, ‘Chief Advisor to the Government of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus called me. Exchanged views on the current situation. Reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured the protection and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.’

After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus was sworn in as the chief advisor of the interim government on August 8. After Mohammad Yunus took charge, PM Modi congratulated him and called for ensuring the safety of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated India’s 78th Independence Day On Thursday, on the occasion of the Independence Day, he had expressed hope that the situation in violence-hit Bangladesh will soon return to normal. He had said that 140 crore Indians are concerned about the safety of Hindus and minorities in the neighbouring country. In his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, he said that India is committed to peace and will remain a well-wisher of Bangladesh in its development journey.

Violence against members of the Hindu community has increased in Bangladesh since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 after resigning as prime minister following widespread protests against her government over the controversial reservation system in jobs.

A non-political Hindu organisation called Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance has claimed that the minority community has faced attacks and threats in 278 places in 48 districts since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5. The organisation has termed it an attack on Hinduism.
