After the floods in 2022, there was also a flood of marriages of underage girls. Before the monsoon rains started in Pakistan, 14-year-old Shamila and her 13-year-old sister Amina were married for money.

The surprising thing is that the parents of these girls had taken this decision to save their family from the danger of floods. After her marriage, Shamila told AFP that she was marrying a man twice her age and she hoped that her life would be happy. Shamila said, “I was happy to hear that I was getting married. I thought that now my life would become easier. But now I have nothing and I am afraid that nothing will be left due to the rain.”

The danger of this thing is increasing in Pakistan

The rate of underage marriages in Pakistan has fallen in recent years, but after heavy flooding in 2022, human rights activists have warned that such marriages are now on the rise due to climate-driven economic insecurity. The summer monsoon between July and September is crucial to the livelihoods and food security of millions of farmers, but scientists say climate change is causing harvests to become heavier and longer, increasing the risk of landslides, flooding and long-term crop losses.

Why did Pakistan see a flood of monsoon brides?

Many of Sindh’s farming villages have not recovered from the 2022 floods, which submerged a third of the country, displaced millions of people and destroyed crops. “This has led to a new trend of ‘monsoon brides,'” said Mashooq Birhamani, founder of the NGO Sujag Sansar, which works with religious scholars to combat child marriage.

He added, “Families will find any way to survive. The first and most obvious way is to marry off their daughters in exchange for money.” Birhamani said child marriages have risen sharply in villages in Dadu district, one of the worst-affected areas, since the 2022 floods, which left lake-like conditions for months.

Khan Mohammad Mallah village, where Shamila and Amina were married in June. Since the last monsoon, 45 minor girls have become wives in this village, 15 of them were married between May and June this year.
