AIMIM Asaduddin Owaisi on Worship Act: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has raised questions on the decisions of the Supreme Court and said that the Places of Worship Act, 1991 is being weakened. He said in his statement that this law was made to stop controversies like Babri Masjid, but recent incidents have given courage to Hindutva organizations to target every mosque. This statement has come at a time when 5 people have died in the violence that took place during the survey of Jama Masjid in Sambhal.
Owaisi tweeted, “The purpose of the Places of Worship Act was to stop controversies like Babri. But the Ayodhya verdict and the court’s role in the Gyanvapi case have emboldened Hindutva organizations to target every mosque. This is unfortunate.”
Serious allegations against the Supreme Court
Owaisi met former Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Also expressed displeasure over Chandrachud’s interpretation of the Places of Worship Act. He said that the purpose of this law is to prevent change in the character of religious places, but the recent comments of the court have given rise to a new debate. Owaisi said, “The Supreme Court has made mistakes in the interpretation of this law, due to which many controversial issues have started emerging again.”
Owaisi said in his statement that the decisions of the Supreme Court have created concern in the Muslim community. He alleged that the role of the judiciary has encouraged such organizations which want to create controversy over religious places.
What is the Places of Worship Act 1991?
Under this law, there is a provision to maintain the character of any religious place in the country as per the status of 15 August 1947. Its purpose is to ensure that religious harmony is maintained and new disputes do not emerge. This statement of Owaisi has come at a time when many controversies are going on in the country regarding religious places. His comment may once again spark a debate as to what balance should be struck between the judiciary and politics on the issue of religious places.
